Do koalas drink? Sure we do!

You’ve all heard the story that koalas don’t drink, haven’t you?  Well, its not strictly true!  We just don’t drink on the ground much…

When it rains, we lick the trunk and branches of the tree as the rain runs down. It is very effective and clean, and we can stay where we’re safe – up high in a tree.

Watch the action of my old auntie Truganina as she laps the rain off the trunk.

Another way we koalas drink is by grooming!  When our fur gets really wet from heavy rain, we lick and lick – partly to get the water, partly to keep our fur in good condition.  Appearances do matter, after all!

So next time you hear it raining, think of us…happy and well hydrated!
